<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Now that I'm a bit more mobile (cast is off the ankle) I've been able to
get into the studio and do some much needed cleaning, organizing, and catching
up. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In doing so I came across some
blocks that had been pieced into an attic windows setting a number of years
ago. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The blocks had come to me through a
block exchange. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Oh my word!!!! <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some of the blocks had been signed and showed
a date of 1994!!!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

managed the sandwiching and decided to send it out to my local long-arm quilter
to do it justice. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Voila!!! <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It's finally completed and looking at each of
the blocks brings back memories of the online conversations we had during this
exchange. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I've discovered that the hand piecing is quite enjoyable and very relaxing. It helps while away the hours spent sitting around the house with a broken ankle. Here are some more that I've completed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tjj9uAaJFhY/WosvRgBmwuI/AAAAAAAAC5U/r-ZiQrCpEwoD8Y6GRakRe6TJd4eQ0_XmgCLcBGAs/s1600/CircleGame.7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1579" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tjj9uAaJFhY/WosvRgBmwuI/AAAAAAAAC5U/r-ZiQrCpEwoD8Y6GRakRe6TJd4eQ0_XmgCLcBGAs/s320/CircleGame.7.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1NOZ04D1SG0/WosvRYtaPDI/AAAAAAAAC5M/yMjy1sDkzkAanAYvBQdBk23EnrhGmvGHwCLcBGAs/s1600/CircleGame.8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1543" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1NOZ04D1SG0/WosvRYtaPDI/AAAAAAAAC5M/yMjy1sDkzkAanAYvBQdBk23EnrhGmvGHwCLcBGAs/s320/CircleGame.8.jpg" width="308" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0PEa1KM8zRs/WosvXA2-MRI/AAAAAAAAC5Y/enliae1YW_UPBg3IfuEeOn36mPg_NQJrgCLcBGAs/s1600/CircleGame.9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1502" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0PEa1KM8zRs/WosvXA2-MRI/AAAAAAAAC5Y/enliae1YW_UPBg3IfuEeOn36mPg_NQJrgCLcBGAs/s320/CircleGame.9.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mgx8ayLuVz0/WosvRzOHN1I/AAAAAAAAC5Q/b9jtRLvEYwwzmxVdR7V6Tsv-nqg4SFTYgCLcBGAs/s1600/CircleGame.10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1599" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mgx8ayLuVz0/WosvRzOHN1I/AAAAAAAAC5Q/b9jtRLvEYwwzmxVdR7V6Tsv-nqg4SFTYgCLcBGAs/s320/CircleGame.10.jpg" width="319" /></a></div>
This last one, with 32 individual patches, still needs the centre circle, but it will have to wait for now. This BOM initially organized by Di-Versity Quilting Supplies in Pritchard, BC has been quite a challenge but at the same time a wonderful tool to practice the use of templates and accurate hand piecing. I'm enjoying every minute of it, and may just take on another one that has been sitting in the cupboard for some two years now.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by and having a peek. Let me know if you have attempted this pattern or any other that you are hand piecing.Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-851310256204592532018-01-29T19:34:00.000-08:002018-01-29T19:34:40.614-08:00Hand Piecing Anyone?We have all become so accustomed to our sewing machines with the various "bells and whistles", me included. It isn't until you are not able to get to it that you begin to come up with ways to continue stitching without relying on your, Pfaff, Bernina, Janome, Juki, Elna and what have you.<br />
<br />
I recently suffered a fall that resulted in a broken fibula. Off my feet for at least two weeks with an air cast; can't put any weight on it; gotta continue in the same cast for an additional 6 weeks after that. Great! and I had so many plans for finishing all those WIPs sitting under the sewing table.<br />
<br />
While sitting on my couch I spied a bin with colourful <a href="http://www.kaffefassett.com/" target="_blank">Kaffe Fassett</a> fabrics, a pattern book by Jen Kingwell titled <a href="https://thequiltingroom.com.au/product/the-circle-game/" target="_blank">Circle Game</a>. Ah Ha!!! This was supposed to be one of my bucket list items; completely hand piecing a quilt top. Look at this; I even started cutting some of the templates. So I started the first one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptjbVuGWbMxTVwynS-9CqZzIr9V2zL0uoy9b8ZZD2s7iZpLBVFrzzLKOKMLGnceRdjhJ2tzi6qVxYAsGNd6qIt9DUgsEYWRfg4MeEsLOUBMiHN9sMh99SSlUPEUzlFEsQONm_b1Ih3rUO/s1600/IMG_2573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1431" data-original-width="1600" height="286" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptjbVuGWbMxTVwynS-9CqZzIr9V2zL0uoy9b8ZZD2s7iZpLBVFrzzLKOKMLGnceRdjhJ2tzi6qVxYAsGNd6qIt9DUgsEYWRfg4MeEsLOUBMiHN9sMh99SSlUPEUzlFEsQONm_b1Ih3rUO/s320/IMG_2573.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I'm doing the circle portion of all the blocks first. Once all 16 are done, I'll do the surrounds and then the borders. Say this hand piecing isn't so bad, and I can still get some stitching enjoyment. Oh look here is the second one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MhqNq4wAhzE/Wm_jyT2gxeI/AAAAAAAAC4g/G88dhY83eQwEORyvnMERfz1q8m85qpj5wCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1581" data-original-width="1600" height="316" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MhqNq4wAhzE/Wm_jyT2gxeI/AAAAAAAAC4g/G88dhY83eQwEORyvnMERfz1q8m85qpj5wCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_2571.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
May as well keep going. Block 3 looks like the same construction more or less. What do you think of the colours on this one?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uhibHFweVQk/Wm_lLJ-hxqI/AAAAAAAAC40/6-t9nfwVu6wSTI6ZcNimfU98oS7nk0mtgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2572.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1593" data-original-width="1600" height="318" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uhibHFweVQk/Wm_lLJ-hxqI/AAAAAAAAC40/6-t9nfwVu6wSTI6ZcNimfU98oS7nk0mtgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_2572.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Okay this next one is a bit more fussy. Hmmmmm....done!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R6goP-9hiYk/Wm_kVe0sIfI/AAAAAAAAC4o/P0nRpjY79TsBzEdzROTHy9rTPrv6LBdDACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1513" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R6goP-9hiYk/Wm_kVe0sIfI/AAAAAAAAC4o/P0nRpjY79TsBzEdzROTHy9rTPrv6LBdDACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_2570.JPG" width="302" /></a></div>
Oh not quite. Still need to add an applique circle for the centre. I'll get that tomorrow. This next one has got some inset seams which should be relatively easy. Done!!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dP1ZPBo7K8I/Wm_lriA96mI/AAAAAAAAC48/Yaq7ipdnWiE6ksjFly0r4gLMMaTXAScjgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1565" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dP1ZPBo7K8I/Wm_lriA96mI/AAAAAAAAC48/Yaq7ipdnWiE6ksjFly0r4gLMMaTXAScjgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_2569.JPG" width="313" /></a></div>
Well that was a productive two days. Tomorrow is another day. Thank you for stopping by and having a peek. Let me know your thoughts or if you have completed this pattern.Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-37784839481615582072018-01-03T20:43:00.000-08:002018-01-03T20:44:55.862-08:00Looking back to move forwardThis seems to be the time when people tend to look back over the past year to see what has been accomplished and take a clue from that pondering to move forward. So I thought I may as well do the same. Hmmmm....to say "it's been a while since I posted here" would be to a gross understatement. I mean, OMG!! the last time I posted here was November 2016. Where did the time go? Well, let's see what's been going on since then.<br />
<br />
I've finished the fabric collage I posted about <a href="https://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2016/11/some-scraps-and-glue.html" target="_blank">here</a>. This is what it looks like.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gVMaNhmMVXs/Wk2wO3pfu0I/AAAAAAAAC4A/bIbeaoNYZowuR_oAkt2Nr3CY-rGNG53rgCLcBGAs/s1600/Orange%2BPeel%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="728" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gVMaNhmMVXs/Wk2wO3pfu0I/AAAAAAAAC4A/bIbeaoNYZowuR_oAkt2Nr3CY-rGNG53rgCLcBGAs/s320/Orange%2BPeel%2B1.jpg" width="145" /></a></div>
I've also been working on some "shimmer" quilts, a technique developed by <a href="http://www.jennybowker.com/" target="_blank">Jenny Bowker</a> and <a href="https://www.jinnybeyer.com/blog/" target="_blank">Jinny Beyer</a>. Here is my first one, but it still needs to be quilted.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nnbStB3K6L4/WkxsD8XlC2I/AAAAAAAAC2U/0CkM00NZFUYa_bFZ1Pt2zYBBGn1WdJm_ACLcBGAs/s1600/Blue%2BShimmer.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="518" data-original-width="720" height="230" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nnbStB3K6L4/WkxsD8XlC2I/AAAAAAAAC2U/0CkM00NZFUYa_bFZ1Pt2zYBBGn1WdJm_ACLcBGAs/s320/Blue%2BShimmer.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I tried a second one with different fabrics and a setting "in the round". As you can see this picture shows it at the piecing stage.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c1VeToCXmK8/Wkxti5OU5qI/AAAAAAAAC2s/8lq8krUcpnsHTExUf2xTkAnjHYI2N9gDwCLcBGAs/s1600/Heritage%2BShimmer%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1351" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c1VeToCXmK8/Wkxti5OU5qI/AAAAAAAAC2s/8lq8krUcpnsHTExUf2xTkAnjHYI2N9gDwCLcBGAs/s320/Heritage%2BShimmer%2B2.JPG" width="270" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is now sewn together and waiting to be sandwiched and quilted. But there are other things that I've been working on and finishing. There is this little wall hanging based on the book <a href="http://www.quilted-lizard.com/index.htm" target="_blank">Happy Villages by Karen Eckmeier</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_zoV9uAV7I/WkxuodL2nMI/AAAAAAAAC24/0XX8Ztp0pnUa9yVImIxVRT3Z5SA-m3-wwCLcBGAs/s1600/Happy%2BVillage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1557" data-original-width="1600" height="311" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_zoV9uAV7I/WkxuodL2nMI/AAAAAAAAC24/0XX8Ztp0pnUa9yVImIxVRT3Z5SA-m3-wwCLcBGAs/s320/Happy%2BVillage.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was given as a "thank you" to a corporate sponsor of a gallery where I volunteer. It's my imaginary Tuscan Village.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The art group I belong to spent time working on a project for Canada's 150th birthday. It required the use of specific techniques and was created in sections that eventually were joined together in some fashion. Mine looked like this and I called it <span style="font-family: inherit;"><i><span lang="EN-US" style="line-height: 115%;">Longitude </span><span lang="EN-US" style="color: #222222; line-height: 115%;">141°</span><span lang="EN-US" style="line-height: 115%;"> W to </span><span lang="EN-US" style="color: #222222; line-height: 115%;">52°</span><span lang="EN-US" style="line-height: 115%;"> W</span></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i><span lang="EN-US" style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qx8VYKl-gq8/WkxxgNwfLBI/AAAAAAAAC3E/lfuWzXsePu4_UmZRcsA3NQWOMF-V3X0YwCLcBGAs/s1600/Brigitte%2BRed%2B-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1125" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qx8VYKl-gq8/WkxxgNwfLBI/AAAAAAAAC3E/lfuWzXsePu4_UmZRcsA3NQWOMF-V3X0YwCLcBGAs/s320/Brigitte%2BRed%2B-.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i><span lang="EN-US" style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It, along with 9 others, was displayed at <a href="http://lakecountryartwalk.ca/" target="_blank">Lake Country's Art Walk</a> last year. My artist statement read:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Canada is vast, abundant and diverse, and
celebrates its 150-year birthday this year. I chose to portray its wildlife diversity interspersed
with other symbols associated with Canada. For the west coast, a salmon; for the east
coast, a puffin; for the north, a polar bear and inukshuk. Represented by the green, red, brown and
yellow triangles circling the puffin, is the Maple Leaf Tartan, Canada’s
official tartan. All are linked together
by Canada’s maple leaf and motto, “A Mari Usque Ad Mare”, from Sea to Sea. I love my home.</span> </div>
<br />
Then there was some finishing of "flimsies" that had been sitting around for quite some time. Finishing these gave me an opportunity to do some much needed FMQ practice.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCab7JAuU_otkDgk247luVFxq-uL8W_BoY-M51Q2h0tWs855uly5jmLI6ZlfqJ3XDKPbf4Vmq5KQMwV8Uaf-xecN1ocGTI8DNYORpwZUxjsIJb30CWvhSkZkZGrHt4e0G8s_CDA8VwR89j/s1600/Trip+for+two.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCab7JAuU_otkDgk247luVFxq-uL8W_BoY-M51Q2h0tWs855uly5jmLI6ZlfqJ3XDKPbf4Vmq5KQMwV8Uaf-xecN1ocGTI8DNYORpwZUxjsIJb30CWvhSkZkZGrHt4e0G8s_CDA8VwR89j/s320/Trip+for+two.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Trip for 2 to Boston</td></tr>

This one in particular had been sitting around for a l-o-n-g time. I had posted about the construction <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2011/05/trip-for-two.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Yup you read that right...6 years ago.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And to round out the finishes, a few community care quilts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Now it's a new year and it's time to get some new projects on the go.<br />

You know, the one where she uses all types of fabrics and composes pictures of imaginary creatures.<br />
<br />
It's basically a type of collage, except using fabric rather than paper. Glue still comes in handy though. Here is a close up of what I mean.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--dMrpVso8u0/WDEHifh7WGI/AAAAAAAACzU/o8NmdgLMIaYT_uyeLn8nRJCPb6HsGXfdQCLcB/s1600/IMG_1836.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--dMrpVso8u0/WDEHifh7WGI/AAAAAAAACzU/o8NmdgLMIaYT_uyeLn8nRJCPb6HsGXfdQCLcB/s320/IMG_1836.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I'm once again working with complimentary colours and using a simple shape. I would like to get this finished by the end of December so that I can use it as a sample piece when I describe the technique to my local fibre art group (QuArtz).<br />
<br />
This is how far I have managed to get but there is still a way to go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ife3-kdEdbY/WDEIvpk_AAI/AAAAAAAACzY/Euj94jJ91GIjKHLpsWaAlNrQoPwnTubzACLcB/s1600/IMG_1835.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ife3-kdEdbY/WDEIvpk_AAI/AAAAAAAACzY/Euj94jJ91GIjKHLpsWaAlNrQoPwnTubzACLcB/s320/IMG_1835.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Till the next time, let the creative muse settle on your shoulder and whisper in your ear.</div>
<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-36077712253160475682016-11-12T19:25:00.000-08:002016-11-12T19:25:00.151-08:00Playing modernAfter a few attempts at making a quilt with a modern aesthetic, I've been playing some more. I shared my first attempts with modern quilts <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2015/03/first-attempt.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2015/06/fmq-update.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I've continued my exploration by joining a group that meets monthly at the local quilt shop. Here is a table runner that I've finished, but now it needs to be quilted. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G9qqd6u7QVY/WBlnACjBW2I/AAAAAAAACy8/sbJGq1VjpvA_5-YtNmVST7jRm2mrN-eOACLcB/s1600/Make%2BIt%2BModern%2BRunner.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G9qqd6u7QVY/WBlnACjBW2I/AAAAAAAACy8/sbJGq1VjpvA_5-YtNmVST7jRm2mrN-eOACLcB/s320/Make%2BIt%2BModern%2BRunner.JPG" width="130" /></a></div>
I contemplated quilting a different motif in each of the trapezoids and then feathers in the border. Am I on the right track? <br />
<br />
<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-68960112270337173052016-11-08T19:00:00.000-08:002016-11-08T19:00:11.524-08:00Printing, printing, and more printingI spent some time in a workshop recently with Catherine Nicolls. I'd not worked with thickened dye and it was amazing what was produced in the workshop. Thickened dye is simply concentrated dye added to sodium alginate thickener. You can read more about it <a href="http://salundannika.blogspot.ca/2012/05/more-fun-with-thickened-dye-and-brief.html" target="_blank">here</a>. <a href="http://www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/sodium-alginate-thickener.html" target="_blank">Dharma Trading</a> also has a good description of sodium alginate thickener. Here is just a sampling of some of my results.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PfTkgbbDWY0/WBlkVHcuQQI/AAAAAAAACyk/nJiJB1tSeuEE-dryJm_eyHwKmp4LFEPaACLcB/s1600/IMG_3764.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="107" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PfTkgbbDWY0/WBlkVHcuQQI/AAAAAAAACyk/nJiJB1tSeuEE-dryJm_eyHwKmp4LFEPaACLcB/s320/IMG_3764.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
This one was created using a variety of colours and brushing the dye on with an old credit card. I like the layering effect that was created by the mixing of the colours.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsNAWoouKseY7JiN-fvPzXFZ_75xd0HuEpQM6zvcjq5SxuDJz2htVgEy-ydFv_kDr3uLL-Pmc33Eh0x18iopbRTfEAAwDWfLs5HHe6xN0YA3DJbzP7vFUKh6odV7SSKaUhTBwzdZ-XMYJm/s1600/IMG_3765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="166" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsNAWoouKseY7JiN-fvPzXFZ_75xd0HuEpQM6zvcjq5SxuDJz2htVgEy-ydFv_kDr3uLL-Pmc33Eh0x18iopbRTfEAAwDWfLs5HHe6xN0YA3DJbzP7vFUKh6odV7SSKaUhTBwzdZ-XMYJm/s320/IMG_3765.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This one was also done with an old credit card, but rather than scraping on the two colours, the edge of the credit card was also used to get linear marks. This is one of my favorites.<br />
<br />
We were asked to choose a simple shape, and create a stamp from that shape. A "2" seemed simple enough and then using two different colours I got "Two for One" or maybe "Double Trouble".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DXvit4ppFx4/WBlkqBU8amI/AAAAAAAACys/AXOYNTj-N_gVx8G6z0N5xDRUkW1C9QtjgCLcB/s1600/IMG_3767.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="163" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DXvit4ppFx4/WBlkqBU8amI/AAAAAAAACys/AXOYNTj-N_gVx8G6z0N5xDRUkW1C9QtjgCLcB/s320/IMG_3767.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Carrying on with the simple shape, by arranging and mirroring the shape, I used it as a resist for a silk screen. It was surprising what came out of that experiment. I'm going to explore this some more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I_QZ45GNoBM/WBlVCspTOcI/AAAAAAAACyA/ETSmInBPcb8XwK4TOr4ZAFkqSXGVUK4GwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3770.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I_QZ45GNoBM/WBlVCspTOcI/AAAAAAAACyA/ETSmInBPcb8XwK4TOr4ZAFkqSXGVUK4GwCLcB/s320/IMG_3770.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
There were many other prints made, and I have yet come up with things to do with all of the samples. The one that was most surprising is the one created with what is referred to as a "breakdown screen". In this instance thickened dye is applied to your silk screen. When the thickened dye has dried, you "draw" clear thickened sodium alginate over the screen. Each draw releases the thickened dye to create print after print, until there is very little left to print. I had one piece of fabric left, corner was missing, and "went for it". Here's the result.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wCsAEM0ExFs/WBlf97oltKI/AAAAAAAACyY/fDeNOhAcu8skybICjaLt3yHRZzlt6tuHgCLcB/s1600/IMG_3773.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wCsAEM0ExFs/WBlf97oltKI/AAAAAAAACyY/fDeNOhAcu8skybICjaLt3yHRZzlt6tuHgCLcB/s320/IMG_3773.JPG" width="234" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my friends said it reminded them of licence plates. Hmmm, what do you think?Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-7660689392368874732016-11-04T19:10:00.000-07:002016-11-04T19:10:02.068-07:00Row by row MysteryOur guild celebrated its 35th anniversary. Part of the celebrations included a challenge and a mystery. The mystery was a row quilt. Each row was revealed at each monthly meeting until all 7 rows were presented. The blocks used represented "Pearls of Wisdom"; appropriate for a 35th Anniversary don't you think? I had been saving a particularly colourful fabric for just the right moment. This seemed to be that moment. Here's what I ended up with; <i>Spicy Pearls</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-trsg6ZH-TY8/WBlN5g_j_dI/AAAAAAAACxg/DM2MSgDRRPYyfkTJRBgV5Z07MYsY4cHhQCLcB/s1600/VSSQ%2BRow%2Bby%2BRow.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-trsg6ZH-TY8/WBlN5g_j_dI/AAAAAAAACxg/DM2MSgDRRPYyfkTJRBgV5Z07MYsY4cHhQCLcB/s320/VSSQ%2BRow%2Bby%2BRow.JPG" width="268" /></a></div>
<br />
The pearls of wisdom were represented by these blocks:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Goose Tracks for "What's good for the goose is good for the gander"</li>
<li>Duck's Foot in the Mud for "Like water off a duck's back"</li>
<li>Hovering Hawks for "Watch like a hawk"</li>
<li>Lost Goslin for "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"</li>
<li>Crows Nest for "Something to crow about"</li>
<li>Birds in the Air for "Birds of a feather flock together"</li>
<li>Hens and Chicks for "Don't count your chickens before they hatch"</li>
</ul>
<div>
Off to do some hand quilting on another UFO. Till the next time, be happy and creative.</div>

It's been almost 6 months since the last time I posted here. Truth be told, I was stuck in a creative rut; didn't know where to begin; so many UFOs, too many learned techniques, and far too many excuses not to go into the studio. Well it's time to get a hold of myself and get going. I'm kinda reminded of the story of the mouse that fell into a bucket of milk. The mouse thought it would drown until it started to lap at the milk; little by little the milk disappeared, and the mouse crawled out of the bucket. These last 6 months I've been "lapping at the milk" and it's finally time to climb out of the bucket.<br />
<br />
I had posted about the beginnings of my work on <a href="http://www.materialgirlfabrics.com/shop/Patterns/Quilt/p/Gypsy-Wife-by-Jen-Kingwell-x3149331.htm" target="_blank">Gypsy Wife by Jen Kingwell</a>, which you can read <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2016/05/gypsy-wife-coming-along.html" target="_blank">here</a>. It's finally pieced and ready for sandwiching and quilting. Here is what it looks like now. Any ideas?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_sk3JuWD8S4/WBlJgD-ovFI/AAAAAAAACxU/4339Cl8Yg8kOUp6mWLrtzcnYsu2KB_JzACLcB/s1600/Gypsy%2BWife%2Bcomplete.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_sk3JuWD8S4/WBlJgD-ovFI/AAAAAAAACxU/4339Cl8Yg8kOUp6mWLrtzcnYsu2KB_JzACLcB/s320/Gypsy%2BWife%2Bcomplete.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I chose to do the background striping as an exercise in transitioning from one hue to another. I think it worked out well.</div>
<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-29292879812596057462016-06-01T10:30:00.000-07:002016-06-01T10:30:12.648-07:00First indigo attemptI recently attended a play day with several of my creative friends. The day was spent dipping fabric into an indigo vat, and a pot of boiling water with potassium permangenate. I had prepared my fabric in various ways to create "resists". Some were tightly stitched, some tightly wrapped with thread, and still others clamped. I didn't think to take pictures prior to dyeing, but here are some of the results.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WIVxNK8eDow/V0xzm5vfuiI/AAAAAAAACwg/0_iBAVxU6iYOTcz3z-_tMa2XJsD_IgJswCLcB/s1600/IMG_3734.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WIVxNK8eDow/V0xzm5vfuiI/AAAAAAAACwg/0_iBAVxU6iYOTcz3z-_tMa2XJsD_IgJswCLcB/s320/IMG_3734.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This one was pinched in the centre, threaded through a wooden "donut", and then loosely wrapped with string at two different intervals.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEqBy3VxbGNjUVJt0gFsDtYkoCAWwCJYiXw2xYkdrng-ad-XPqFB-1QK-J1rI1-ykQ8eedBo2jR_Zcn15nYKVbualmdFvQ0WxDG2ejH2ZUmPU8lQ2kh1eH1jjGBvylA4R7JHwXlJLj6QwA/s1600/IMG_3735.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEqBy3VxbGNjUVJt0gFsDtYkoCAWwCJYiXw2xYkdrng-ad-XPqFB-1QK-J1rI1-ykQ8eedBo2jR_Zcn15nYKVbualmdFvQ0WxDG2ejH2ZUmPU8lQ2kh1eH1jjGBvylA4R7JHwXlJLj6QwA/s320/IMG_3735.JPG" width="307" /></a></div>
This one, dipped into the potassium permangenate, was folded into a triangle of several layers and clamped with wooden "petals". Some of the wooden petals had previously been used in another dye vat, hence the hints of violet in the patterning.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6ssFvQMzwQM/V0xzjOtJP1I/AAAAAAAACwc/cB6Q1s2dEWQ7YgT4BZ1mazYlMetGTwvXACLcB/s1600/IMG_3737.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6ssFvQMzwQM/V0xzjOtJP1I/AAAAAAAACwc/cB6Q1s2dEWQ7YgT4BZ1mazYlMetGTwvXACLcB/s320/IMG_3737.JPG" width="165" /></a></div>
This piece was the easiest. Folded accordion style lengthwise and then folded again crosswise, half of the piece was dipped into potassium permangenate, while the other half was dipped into indigo.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WBkXwyqY0MU/V0xzuN2mcRI/AAAAAAAACwo/_n9uds0veAwC9Fvc6AWfVsaAtRCoREhSwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3739.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WBkXwyqY0MU/V0xzuN2mcRI/AAAAAAAACwo/_n9uds0veAwC9Fvc6AWfVsaAtRCoREhSwCLcB/s320/IMG_3739.JPG" width="179" /></a></div>
Ahhh! this one looked quite comical after prepping. Pinching the fabric and wrapping the resulting "peak" very tightly with string is what created the circular pattern. If you click the picture, you should be able to get a closer look and see the imprint of the string in the radial spokes of the circles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r-R2aUQLDW8/V0xzwcZuYhI/AAAAAAAACws/TGvDi6vzsJgU6om7EQcYpCLhlyTD7ma4QCLcB/s1600/IMG_3741.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r-R2aUQLDW8/V0xzwcZuYhI/AAAAAAAACws/TGvDi6vzsJgU6om7EQcYpCLhlyTD7ma4QCLcB/s320/IMG_3741.JPG" width="273" /></a></div>
This one was stitched in several rows of running stitch and tightly drawn together and tied off. It looked like a flattened and squished furnace filter prior to dipping into the indigo.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qlnBJvY2ZFw/V0xz6qZt_TI/AAAAAAAACww/lvHDM9YoOAw61v2PtLvZLKSYgiUnCDbxACLcB/s1600/IMG_3745.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qlnBJvY2ZFw/V0xz6qZt_TI/AAAAAAAACww/lvHDM9YoOAw61v2PtLvZLKSYgiUnCDbxACLcB/s320/IMG_3745.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I even managed to dye some thread. I learned that if you want an even colouring, you can't twist the thread, but rather have it loosely held together. Regardless, I liked the variegated look of the threads which will incorporate well when stitched into the fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall, for a first attempt, I was thrilled with the results. Now its off to the studio again to work on another project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

You can read an interview with Jen <a href="http://www.raspberryspool.com/jen-kingwell/" target="_blank">here</a>. I thought the pattern was relatively new but this pattern has been around for a while (since at least 2014) and there have been several quilt-alongs. No matter...I've been enjoying the construction of the quilt and rather than use random scraps as depicted on the cover of the pattern book, I've been working with a blue and orange colour palette. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEistaqECxeIc0uzuw7n76NWml7_pNXt-MtA1o1Z-SgL6bdXsjv3yHZCUYzp1yvo5EXdooF-jYMRo_fgGKiCy0B42Eq-pLAWo0ssOLS1dZJ78A76jZL-NDcBLztauXX5jq6CZWp3jtCS1TDw/s1600/IMG_1327.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEistaqECxeIc0uzuw7n76NWml7_pNXt-MtA1o1Z-SgL6bdXsjv3yHZCUYzp1yvo5EXdooF-jYMRo_fgGKiCy0B42Eq-pLAWo0ssOLS1dZJ78A76jZL-NDcBLztauXX5jq6CZWp3jtCS1TDw/s320/IMG_1327.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Quite a number of the fabrics are from my stash, but then there are some new ones added in for a bit of spice. This is what I've managed thus far.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kPmIGBpefn4/V0xuTXDdR-I/AAAAAAAACwM/Ryvah7bMaQcQnMhy9X1Qo5GajYL8wRHngCLcB/s1600/IMG_3747.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="259" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kPmIGBpefn4/V0xuTXDdR-I/AAAAAAAACwM/Ryvah7bMaQcQnMhy9X1Qo5GajYL8wRHngCLcB/s320/IMG_3747.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt is sewn in sections and there are two more sections to go. The last two sections (which are missing right now) will show more orange striping in the background and merge together in the middle of the top. I'm hoping the transition from blue to orange in the background will be more noticeable when the top is complete.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Till the next time.</div>
<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-66581935505660214232016-05-02T13:59:00.000-07:002016-05-02T13:59:10.899-07:00Filling the wellI'm sure that each of you out there have at one time or another run into a void of inspiration, or just plain silence from your muse. That's when it's time to consider "filling the well" as I call it. <br />
<br />
Until recently it seemed inspiration and creativity had taken a holiday. No amount of fabric fondling, picture taking, magazine perusing was helping. I couldn't stand it so decided to wander the internet to see if something out there would help. I came across several suggestions relating to sketchbooks. Ah yes, but where does one start and what should I put into a sketchbook. This is where <a href="http://dionneswift.co.uk/" target="_blank">Dionne Swift's</a> online class <a href="http://dionneswift.co.uk/store/developing-sketchbooks-online-workshop/" target="_blank">"Developing Sketchbooks"</a> came to the rescue. She told us it was time to play.<br />
<br />
Okay...play area set up<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yauh4lJUhLs/Vye6zG_fMhI/AAAAAAAACvk/1k7jml-hZzQzUZYlW21RUSTUDiQ19UjqgCLcB/s1600/Work%2Btable.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yauh4lJUhLs/Vye6zG_fMhI/AAAAAAAACvk/1k7jml-hZzQzUZYlW21RUSTUDiQ19UjqgCLcB/s320/Work%2Btable.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, play with paint, stencils, sponges, charcoal, whatever.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkObbc1kyRo/Vye6qvPs5dI/AAAAAAAACvg/Tpke8xDDxrMv0wYi5XT5fEIi-8q5sYuCgCLcB/s1600/Session%2B1%2BPainted%2Bpages%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkObbc1kyRo/Vye6qvPs5dI/AAAAAAAACvg/Tpke8xDDxrMv0wYi5XT5fEIi-8q5sYuCgCLcB/s320/Session%2B1%2BPainted%2Bpages%2B1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There were more pages, but those are just a few that I'm sharing here. Next using the theme of "circles" we were to mark our painted pages with.....you guessed it.....circles! WHAT??!! mess up my colorful pages? What the heck....just do it!!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YZKbKJ6wNQE/Vye6zTFvXOI/AAAAAAAACvw/vj49bYJG0o4yDF0mKwpphFKCwzoIFGDEQCKgB/s1600/Session%2B2%2B-%2BCircles.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YZKbKJ6wNQE/Vye6zTFvXOI/AAAAAAAACvw/vj49bYJG0o4yDF0mKwpphFKCwzoIFGDEQCKgB/s320/Session%2B2%2B-%2BCircles.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Say these aren't looking too bad. What do you think? Oh...that gives me an idea....(look out creativity rut, I've got my groove back!)<br />
<br />
Let's see what <a href="http://www.dirtyfootprints-studio.com/" target="_blank">Dirty Footprints Studio</a> has to offer in their <a href="http://www.dirtyfootprints-studio.com/21-secrets" target="_blank">21 Secrets</a>.<br />
<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-26602263334499632072016-03-28T17:26:00.000-07:002016-04-07T12:06:44.505-07:00Splendidly working on SSSAYup that's right! I've joined in on the <a href="http://www.thesplendidsampler.com/" target="_blank">Splendid Sampler Sew Along</a> hosted by <a href="http://blog.patsloan.com/2016/02/pat-sloan-splendid-sampler-block-1-its-mine.html" target="_blank">Pat Sloan</a> and <a href="http://quiltjane.com/" target="_blank">Jane Davidson</a>. You may have noticed the sidebar link.<br />
<br />
Here are the ones I've completed so far. All those tiny pieces have been challenging (blocks are 6 inches finished), but what a way to use up small bits. As you can see, I'm sticking to a black, white and yellow colour palette.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnFFAvSA9dQsjQIcqqi04GFNmO503xqXkviiaUtkDHJlWQdm_vq3tiX_2EmcFyEm_sU-DsfoMieLCMxdbdZmwinZypoUNfSZDY5xpMyWECTH5pSnjCAzUVw-NFRygR1I5TgT6HCHCaZ4Fx/s1600/Splendid+Sampler+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnFFAvSA9dQsjQIcqqi04GFNmO503xqXkviiaUtkDHJlWQdm_vq3tiX_2EmcFyEm_sU-DsfoMieLCMxdbdZmwinZypoUNfSZDY5xpMyWECTH5pSnjCAzUVw-NFRygR1I5TgT6HCHCaZ4Fx/s320/Splendid+Sampler+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I've completed blocks 10, 11 and 12 but they are not pictured. Block 13 was just shown on Sunday and is in the construction stage. I'll end up having quite a collection when this sew along ends in March 2017. You can check out the Facebook page <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheSplendidSampler/" target="_blank">here</a> to see what others are doing.<br />
<br />
Till the next time, may your creative ideas see fruition.Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-26589746326457525062016-03-21T17:08:00.000-07:002016-03-21T17:09:07.740-07:00Leaves, leaves, and more leavesWho knew that you could get the image of a leaf onto fabric without a lot of dye. A while ago I attended a workshop at <a href="http://www.sorrento-centre.bc.ca/" target="_blank">Sorrento Centre</a> here in British Columbia lead by <a href="http://ravensthread.com/about-me/" target="_blank">Catherine Nicolls</a>. Using a variety of inks, paints, stamps and <a href="http://sakuraofamerica.com/component/product/products/382" target="_blank">pigma pen</a>s, we marked up our fabric and ended up with some wonderful renditions of leaves. Here are some of my results. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RheUgkvmGoU/VvCLrQa7AfI/AAAAAAAACvA/tVxS7wr12WIaGKQ_kKIOlSSKwGD7dggTw/s1600/Brigitte%2BLeaf%2Bprints.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RheUgkvmGoU/VvCLrQa7AfI/AAAAAAAACvA/tVxS7wr12WIaGKQ_kKIOlSSKwGD7dggTw/s320/Brigitte%2BLeaf%2Bprints.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I'm now charged with the task of turning the printed fabric into a "practical" item. Homework for our next gathering this October. Hmmm, gotta think on that.<br />
<br />
We also experimented with eco-printing. We used silk blend scarves, eucalyptus, amaranth, and maple leaves. First we soaked the scarves in a mixture of water and vinegar (sorry can't remember the ratio), laid the scarves out and placed the leaves along one half of the length of the scarf.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2laIHbQFZw4/VvBxfJHQqII/AAAAAAAACt8/suL38IpvXZYxgPhR_4IkZQdES_mmFCHaQ/s1600/DSCN7796.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2laIHbQFZw4/VvBxfJHQqII/AAAAAAAACt8/suL38IpvXZYxgPhR_4IkZQdES_mmFCHaQ/s320/DSCN7796.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then we folded the scarf in half lengthwise, rolled it round a skewer and added it to a pot along with an old railroad spike. See...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X88u6tqOjwg/VvByLnORu3I/AAAAAAAACuE/lsu84c0_YkwRzf6T0ZfsNUhxSZGGX9ShQ/s1600/Wrapped.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X88u6tqOjwg/VvByLnORu3I/AAAAAAAACuE/lsu84c0_YkwRzf6T0ZfsNUhxSZGGX9ShQ/s320/Wrapped.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next some onion skins were added for good measure...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-njXZCzfN1LI/VvByL1N3cgI/AAAAAAAACuI/WGhW1oNqIYIKBRZNhBCzJBkFb8twvI9mw/s1600/onion%2Bskins.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-njXZCzfN1LI/VvByL1N3cgI/AAAAAAAACuI/WGhW1oNqIYIKBRZNhBCzJBkFb8twvI9mw/s320/onion%2Bskins.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Water added and set to boil overnight. </span>We kept going out to see what was happening if anything.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PCwsLOv7C78/VvCJSRFrWxI/AAAAAAAACuo/_OMu811J9SEGsJrZZlJRLeR1QJk_BXmDQ/s1600/boiled.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PCwsLOv7C78/VvCJSRFrWxI/AAAAAAAACuo/_OMu811J9SEGsJrZZlJRLeR1QJk_BXmDQ/s320/boiled.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After getting them out of the pot, this is what they looked like before unwrapping.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUzpwZ08vDRSBEwHO2H0QCQ1-0T4CsKOm9HHOlF58ikoOS3ZTntHDOjQof4ZjhNsRT-GV5vcuupM6tVdjMIiO8MF8-6J1TmlGOrRDNCWZGHOEO10__euRa8pOXFReHCBsK9x5wA_AOGDW/s1600/batched.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUzpwZ08vDRSBEwHO2H0QCQ1-0T4CsKOm9HHOlF58ikoOS3ZTntHDOjQof4ZjhNsRT-GV5vcuupM6tVdjMIiO8MF8-6J1TmlGOrRDNCWZGHOEO10__euRa8pOXFReHCBsK9x5wA_AOGDW/s320/batched.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then it came time to unwrap. Here is half of mine. You can see that the portion of the scarf that was most exposed is darker and shows the resist of the wrapping tape.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a closer look.</div>

<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-4404124521962644762016-01-11T21:25:00.001-08:002016-01-11T21:25:45.621-08:00Second week...into 2016 and I figured it's about time I got back to my blog. No excuses for not posting; got busy with life's challenges, then got lazy; that's it. But that has changed. I've been playing in my studio, at retreats, and at workshops. Here's a rundown of some of the items that have resulted from that playing since my last post.<br />
<br />
July last year saw me at <a href="http://www.sunpeaksresort.com/quilting-in-the-mountains" target="_blank">Quilting in The Mountains at Sun Peaks Resort</a>. I had the opportunity to play around with triangles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UwVIRhZHvqE/VpRinrxFppI/AAAAAAAACrs/HlCT-hwtlQE/s1600/IMG_1152.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UwVIRhZHvqE/VpRinrxFppI/AAAAAAAACrs/HlCT-hwtlQE/s320/IMG_1152.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course it is now waiting to be quilted. It's just big enough to be used as a coverlet for a baby carriage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
August saw me moving to a new home. After setting up my studio, I came across some blocks that I had designed in a Soft Edge Piecing workshop. I was able to use a wonderful Jinny Beyer border print. They are only sitting on the design wall in the pictures below, but once sewn together and set on point in an alternate block setting they should make a stunning lap quilt, yes?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
September brought the beginning of a new Guild year. <a href="http://www.vssq.org/" target="_blank">Vernon Silver Star Quilters</a> have several subgroups, one of which is called quARTz. We have fun experimenting and pushing the envelope of what we can do with textiles and fibre. The group decided to have members volunteer to share which artist inspires them and is their favorite. The rest of the group is then to produce a postcard or artist trading card in that artist's style. So far we have been presented with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufus_Porter_(inventor)" target="_blank">Rufus Porter</a>, <a href="http://www.royhenryvickers.com/" target="_blank">Roy Henry Vickers</a>, <a href="http://www.scotcities.com/mackintosh/" target="_blank">Charles Rennie Mackintosh</a>, and Robin Ledrew, a local artist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is my interpretation of Vickers style</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This is getting a bit long, so I'll continue this in another post. Besides, I have to take some process pictures of what I'm working on currently so that I have something to show you.<br />

Don't believe me? Go have a look <a href="http://such-designs.com/2012/05/lego-sewing-machine-tutorial.html#lightbox/0/" target="_blank">here</a>; you'll have to scroll down a bit. Just had to share this little tidbit. I discovered it while researching the value of older series Berninas.<br />
<br />
I've recently been playing around with fabric paints and dyes just to keep the creative urge satisfied. I decided to do some stamping on old handkerchiefs. Here are close ups of some of the results.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ecmqi6dRDnQ/VZrPb7AQYKI/AAAAAAAACqs/NqVqapGO3lE/s1600/Potato%2Bmasher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ecmqi6dRDnQ/VZrPb7AQYKI/AAAAAAAACqs/NqVqapGO3lE/s320/Potato%2Bmasher.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This one was done with a potato masher and the end of a thread spool;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Some dye that had been sitting in the spare fridge in the basement came along with me to a dyeing session with one of my art groups. Here are the results of that playing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1CTPIRaGQOo/VYYeSXFer9I/AAAAAAAACp4/_8KqHJwkiVg/s1600/IMG_1066.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1CTPIRaGQOo/VYYeSXFer9I/AAAAAAAACp4/_8KqHJwkiVg/s320/IMG_1066.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The yellows went from very vibrant to a very pale.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zhobTGMCKPQ/VYYeR4jwHSI/AAAAAAAACpw/DIYIJtI39GY/s1600/IMG_1067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zhobTGMCKPQ/VYYeR4jwHSI/AAAAAAAACpw/DIYIJtI39GY/s320/IMG_1067.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The one on the left was wrapped around a small pvc pipe and "scrunched". That scrunching acted as a resist. I'll overdye that one I think.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aSkj4kuJyXE/VYYeRtXIqmI/AAAAAAAACps/l8mJsZs7YKg/s1600/IMG_1068.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aSkj4kuJyXE/VYYeRtXIqmI/AAAAAAAACps/l8mJsZs7YKg/s320/IMG_1068.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
This one was my favorite; all that mottling. It was created by loosely wrapping the fabric with elastic bands. The wind was blowing that day so it was hard to get pictures.There were some very interesting results. I'll have to give this a try again.<br />
<br />

Thanks Janet! I'm getting the hang of it.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had posted <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2015/03/first-attempt.html" target="_blank">here</a> about two lap quilts that I was going to free motion. At first all that negative space seemed daunting. After several days of procrastinating, I said "Just do it". Well, here is the first one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xbBJ0dgKZm8/VXnWiyv4LTI/AAAAAAAACos/P5lFkc7cd20/s1600/IMG_3658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xbBJ0dgKZm8/VXnWiyv4LTI/AAAAAAAACos/P5lFkc7cd20/s320/IMG_3658.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Hard to see the quilting in that picture, so here are a couple of close ups.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-obr-mVEgS64/VXnW7I7IVLI/AAAAAAAACo0/nmBiLpInCoQ/s1600/IMG_3659.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-obr-mVEgS64/VXnW7I7IVLI/AAAAAAAACo0/nmBiLpInCoQ/s320/IMG_3659.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KxIoM33GhMM/VXnW7XhynqI/AAAAAAAACo4/lbhOmcIpT-Q/s1600/IMG_3660.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KxIoM33GhMM/VXnW7XhynqI/AAAAAAAACo4/lbhOmcIpT-Q/s320/IMG_3660.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I've called it "Modern Fassett" What do you think?<br />
<br />
Okay, so now I started to feel a bit more confident, so I took on the second one. Called it "One Fell Out" after the little red square on the left.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nj3cFFCqx7o/VXnX0UVmalI/AAAAAAAACpI/eYid4cKnHPo/s1600/IMG_3663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nj3cFFCqx7o/VXnX0UVmalI/AAAAAAAACpI/eYid4cKnHPo/s320/IMG_3663.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Here is the detail on this one.<br />

Hey this is getting easier and easier. I'm off to see what other quilt sandwiches I can conquer. Till the next time, thanks for visiting.</div>

I've been busy packing, searching, more packing and more searching. That's a story for another day. Let's get caught up. <br />
<br />
I recently attended <a href="http://www.canadianquilter.com/" target="_blank">Canadian Quilters' Association</a> conference in Lethbridge, Alberta. Travelling by bus left the full 12 hours of driving to someone else and allowed me time to visit with 42 others on the bus and take pictures along the way. Going there the weather was not cooperating so a lot of visiting and reading took place. Coming back though the sun shone in all it's glory so I got a few photos of the scenery passing by. Here are a few.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Huqo_5l-aw/VXnLcYXT5XI/AAAAAAAACoE/pl-HBsUmsrI/s1600/Going%2Bhome%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Huqo_5l-aw/VXnLcYXT5XI/AAAAAAAACoE/pl-HBsUmsrI/s320/Going%2Bhome%2B2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Taken from the bus, here is what the prairie looks like. FLAT! as far as the eye can see. Hey! inspiration for a modern quilt? Then came the Rockies. I think I'm a "mountain girl" at heart.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bcv57OqDdUw/VXnK7dyiwOI/AAAAAAAACnw/B9BxWIGzpMU/s1600/Going%2Bhome%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="182" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bcv57OqDdUw/VXnK7dyiwOI/AAAAAAAACnw/B9BxWIGzpMU/s320/Going%2Bhome%2B3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nVUBDz7KMJ4/VXnK-vKdZzI/AAAAAAAACoA/NkbF0ySZ758/s1600/Going%2Bhome%2B6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nVUBDz7KMJ4/VXnK-vKdZzI/AAAAAAAACoA/NkbF0ySZ758/s320/Going%2Bhome%2B6.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-93vIfUC7eQ8/VXnK8iCuDCI/AAAAAAAACn4/Wpq42oyRuNw/s1600/going%2Bhome%2B15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-93vIfUC7eQ8/VXnK8iCuDCI/AAAAAAAACn4/Wpq42oyRuNw/s320/going%2Bhome%2B15.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Not so flat! Very majestic and still snow-topped in June.<br />
<br />
While at the conference, there was lots to see and do. The National Juried Show winners were something to see, especially Best of Show. You can see them <a href="http://www.canadianquilter.com/photo-gallery/national-jury-show.php?year=2015" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
There was the <a href="http://www.canadianquilter.com/photo-gallery/trend-tex-quilters-challenge.php" target="_blank">Trend Tex challenge</a> entries, a fundraiser for CQA/ACC. I attempted to bid on several of the pieces (Quilts #19, 43, and 61), but was out bid on those three. I was however lucky enough to win Quilt #21, <i>Rebecca Laughs at the Wind</i>. Can't wait to get it in the mail.<br />
<br />
I also managed to take <a href="http://blog.cindyneedham.com/" target="_blank">Cindy Needham'</a>s workshop <i>Linen Ladies</i>. What an inspiring teacher. She had numerous samples, plenty of handouts and gave us lots of time to practice. My friend <a href="http://round22.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Janet</a> joined me in that class, making it especially enjoyable. We came with vintage linens to mark for quilting and after an informative lecture from Cindy, were given a host of quilting stencils to work with. Here is a sampling of some of the works in progress.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jYaBRfrBJAw/VXnRYnO-6VI/AAAAAAAACoU/D_fCAtxhBt4/s1600/IMG_1035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jYaBRfrBJAw/VXnRYnO-6VI/AAAAAAAACoU/D_fCAtxhBt4/s320/IMG_1035.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMvQhExbXk0/VXnRfceQVVI/AAAAAAAACoc/K6Up65Jv72w/s1600/IMG_1033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMvQhExbXk0/VXnRfceQVVI/AAAAAAAACoc/K6Up65Jv72w/s320/IMG_1033.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It may be difficult to see the markings, but just click on the picture to get a larger view.<br />
<br />
I have been working on my free motion quilting of late, but that is for another post. Till the next time, thanks for visiting.<br />
<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-45967403360832078322015-03-27T21:05:00.002-07:002015-03-27T21:05:55.497-07:00A cover upMy Guild meets in the fellowship hall of a local church. The church had recently installed a new electrical panel front and centre above their coffee counter. The Guild was asked if someone would be willing to create something that would cover that electrical panel. Along with two others (Catherine, Shirley and Deborah) I stepped forward. Yes, yes I know I have other projects to finish, but remember my word for 2015 is BEGIN. So I began another one.<br />
<br />
We started with orphaned blocks that were left in the Guild's "scrap stash". I thought they would look good along the borders.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sFkjkIvMZ7I/VRYfBLBCDuI/AAAAAAAACm8/vtJMNi18odE/s1600/scallops.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sFkjkIvMZ7I/VRYfBLBCDuI/AAAAAAAACm8/vtJMNi18odE/s1600/scallops.jpg" height="320" width="166" /></a></div>
<br />
We measured and measured again and determined what was needed was a rectangular piece. Using some coffee themed fabric we stitched additional borders. They're marked "2" and "3" in the picture below.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R-QewO85Zq4/VRYeOFyX36I/AAAAAAAACmU/ynouwdb30Lc/s1600/Border%2B2%2Band%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R-QewO85Zq4/VRYeOFyX36I/AAAAAAAACmU/ynouwdb30Lc/s1600/Border%2B2%2Band%2B3.jpg" height="320" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes that's right...we were working from the outside in. Next came some simple nine patches for fillers and paper pieced coffee mugs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kn1UzGFS_nc/VRYfBIiCp9I/AAAAAAAACnA/YHkcucOhABc/s1600/paper%2Bpieced%2Bmugs%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kn1UzGFS_nc/VRYfBIiCp9I/AAAAAAAACnA/YHkcucOhABc/s1600/paper%2Bpieced%2Bmugs%2B2.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
We now needed something to tie all the pieces together. Shirley experimented with machine embroidery. She had chosen a wonderful way of doing some embroidery so that it formed a sort of "crossword" centre.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dASv5mgQX2U/VRYerwSNVxI/AAAAAAAACmk/Q8Xdl7cKpPY/s1600/embroidery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dASv5mgQX2U/VRYerwSNVxI/AAAAAAAACmk/Q8Xdl7cKpPY/s1600/embroidery.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Notice that certain letters are capitalized? You'll see in a minute why she did this. We needed something more to fill in the spaces; some pieces were fussy cut and others simple fabric squares. Here is Catherine auditioning fabric for additional sashing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--Fz6IdaDidg/VRYebXFHGRI/AAAAAAAACmc/DOKI0uIZjSI/s1600/auditioning.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--Fz6IdaDidg/VRYebXFHGRI/AAAAAAAACmc/DOKI0uIZjSI/s1600/auditioning.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
With some additional piecing, the top was finally ready for sandwiching and some fancy free motion quilting. Deborah added her flair and VOILA!!! Done and presented to the church. Here is the completed wall hanging.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jtshAmghtEo/VRYjJx9PSHI/AAAAAAAACnQ/ovR691Ggh-Y/s1600/full%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jtshAmghtEo/VRYjJx9PSHI/AAAAAAAACnQ/ovR691Ggh-Y/s1600/full%2B2.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The wall hanging is centered over the electrical panel and can be easily slid out of the way if the panel needs servicing. Oh yeah! See how the capital letters spell out "COFFEE"? It was challenging working from the outside into the centre. When it was presented this month, the pastor and staff's eyes glistened and smiled. It was an enriching experience.</div>

My first attempt is yet to be finished.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbb6-I2JD2AVTTX029MKMx6wVfn0U3V_TDwS6G5GnFblpuoRVGdFMr59iBumJ05wq4I7LNAAf7i-AbrQbtDNXCBTSeR5L4ReaLIlBRcAjmzJrrd7bhv2MKU_XkyJwmrCRFDrqdVMNPU1zF/s1600/IMG_3541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbb6-I2JD2AVTTX029MKMx6wVfn0U3V_TDwS6G5GnFblpuoRVGdFMr59iBumJ05wq4I7LNAAf7i-AbrQbtDNXCBTSeR5L4ReaLIlBRcAjmzJrrd7bhv2MKU_XkyJwmrCRFDrqdVMNPU1zF/s1600/IMG_3541.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see from the following detail shots (sorry for the blurry edges) it is in the stages of quilting at the moment.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uarCc9sib3w/VQ9qurAL08I/AAAAAAAAClY/VDgRZI2SI2s/s1600/IMG_3542.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uarCc9sib3w/VQ9qurAL08I/AAAAAAAAClY/VDgRZI2SI2s/s1600/IMG_3542.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9jW9Yrdi1e-TVPICEfk9khsiBrMc1EtHWQGVh_OG5jb7yeRFlhBJKtf9Qh6Dw0WMj-Ey00LLQGmvzXxd3ztK9jn3UjXpfT9sS4iYyFpfS7DQZZ4qp91_8uHANcDDSYRnWbuRlSjWL9mUJ/s1600/IMG_3543.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9jW9Yrdi1e-TVPICEfk9khsiBrMc1EtHWQGVh_OG5jb7yeRFlhBJKtf9Qh6Dw0WMj-Ey00LLQGmvzXxd3ztK9jn3UjXpfT9sS4iYyFpfS7DQZZ4qp91_8uHANcDDSYRnWbuRlSjWL9mUJ/s1600/IMG_3543.JPG" height="200" width="150" /></a></div>
<br />
At the end of that first meeting we were given three strips of fabric; a black, dark grey and light grey, and told to produce something. We could add additional fabric. Here is what I came up with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-USiiOTEvOQg/VQ9kuYHSvMI/AAAAAAAACk4/BYmYr6d9SFA/s1600/IMG_3533.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-USiiOTEvOQg/VQ9kuYHSvMI/AAAAAAAACk4/BYmYr6d9SFA/s1600/IMG_3533.JPG" height="320" width="264" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">and the detail.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yqN_h67HGnA/VQ9kxpVOZPI/AAAAAAAAClA/tM1A7oofeKw/s1600/IMG_3534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yqN_h67HGnA/VQ9kxpVOZPI/AAAAAAAAClA/tM1A7oofeKw/s1600/IMG_3534.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
It's hard to see by you can just barely make out that the binding on this one uses the same fabric as the circles and is placed on alternate corners.<br />
<br />
Because I can't seem to stop at just one I've started another one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wgx-wvxcw8s/VQ9rQGpZdYI/AAAAAAAAClo/NyRqObSHg38/s1600/IMG_3544.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wgx-wvxcw8s/VQ9rQGpZdYI/AAAAAAAAClo/NyRqObSHg38/s1600/IMG_3544.JPG" height="320" width="199" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I just have to figure out what kind of quilting I want to attempt in the negative space. Straight line, boxes, greek key? what do you think?<br />
<br />

I've been busy finishing off a few more items that have been sitting around for some time. One of them was a top that I made with "leaders and enders" that has been sitting in my FMQ pile. For those of you that don't know what leaders and enders are, you can go <a href="http://quiltsbyjen.ca/what-are-leaders-and-enders/" target="_blank">here</a> to find out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yriUFxQelOs/VQ9vMnzsWJI/AAAAAAAACl0/cc-6PCQVKfc/s1600/IMG_3539.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yriUFxQelOs/VQ9vMnzsWJI/AAAAAAAACl0/cc-6PCQVKfc/s1600/IMG_3539.JPG" height="242" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I did free motion quilt it, but not very tightly. I wanted it to be rather cuddly so that it could drape nicely on someone's lap. It was donated as a "Community Cares" quilt to my guild.<br />
<br />
Another pieced top that had also been patiently waiting its turn for some quilting is this little "I Spy" quilt . <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YbhfsbfYvTE/VQ9w6-b0gBI/AAAAAAAACmA/-wVuPHLDZGE/s1600/IMG_3536.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YbhfsbfYvTE/VQ9w6-b0gBI/AAAAAAAACmA/-wVuPHLDZGE/s1600/IMG_3536.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Again this one was quilted very simply in the ditch, bound and is now also in my guild's Community Cares chest waiting to be donated.<br />
<br />
Now I'm off to see what else my studio has been hiding from me. Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-26138787514856508352015-03-05T19:28:00.000-08:002015-03-05T19:28:00.278-08:00Placemats galore and some pillow slipsJust six hours of work and this is what the quilters at the seniors' centre were able to make.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T2ng7H8EaJI/VPPXyJmRMQI/AAAAAAAACj0/5tBXRG5LlHo/s1600/Placemats.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T2ng7H8EaJI/VPPXyJmRMQI/AAAAAAAACj0/5tBXRG5LlHo/s1600/Placemats.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They were created using just four fat quarters, some cutting, stitching, more cutting, shuffling, restitching and voila! Placemats.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lmRRQUWs-uI/VPPXms9pVNI/AAAAAAAACjs/kHDmxIPKyeA/s1600/Placemats%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lmRRQUWs-uI/VPPXms9pVNI/AAAAAAAACjs/kHDmxIPKyeA/s1600/Placemats%2B2.JPG" height="320" width="293" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The ladies are hoping these bright little goodies bring a smile to someone lucky enough to end up with them.</div>

I've been focussing on beginning several projects and completing some of them. I finally managed to finish my piece I called "Light Switches". I showed a picture of the unfinished piece <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2015/01/word-for-2015.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2014/04/rectangles-and-curves.html" target="_blank">here</a>. It's finished now and as luck would have it, it hung in a local gallery. Here is what it looked like in the gallery,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v_diIIImalE/VPPUVmP1fNI/AAAAAAAACjQ/xYkbCU4oc4w/s1600/Gallery%2BVertigo%2BSubmission%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v_diIIImalE/VPPUVmP1fNI/AAAAAAAACjQ/xYkbCU4oc4w/s1600/Gallery%2BVertigo%2BSubmission%2B2.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I donated the piece for their fundraiser "Almost Famous". You can read about the fundraiser <a href="http://galleryvertigo.net/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I also finished the quilting on the "Three Gals at the Beach" which I posted about <a href="http://aloosebobbin.blogspot.ca/2015/01/word-for-2015.html" target="_blank">here</a>. This close up shows some of the free motion quilting I did on it.<br />

Next time I'll show you the place mats that were made by a small group quilters at the local seniors centre. </div>
<br />Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3227722122627421667.post-11409347066288707502015-02-09T09:55:00.002-08:002015-02-09T09:55:49.123-08:00Begin WIP reductionLike so many other quilters I found my self tripping over fabric on the floor, the cutting table, the sewing machine table and on every available shelf. Time to "deal with it" to some degree.<br />
<br />
After making a quilt for a family member, my step-mother had sufficient pieced blocks and fabric left over that I managed to get them off the table by piecing this lap quilt. It's rather simple with just 9-patches and setting blocks, but it will keep someone cozy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2RixEAScwzI/VNjzGYj4oKI/AAAAAAAACjE/fP8aUwfsM5A/s1600/Eva's%2BLeftover%2BScraps.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2RixEAScwzI/VNjzGYj4oKI/AAAAAAAACjE/fP8aUwfsM5A/s1600/Eva's%2BLeftover%2BScraps.JPG" height="320" width="283" /></a></div>
<br />
It's all pinned and ready for some free motion quilting. That cleared the cutting table. Now for the next thing to begin.Renatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15703909499714319583noreply@blogger.com2
